Minutes
Topic: Extension Media catalog
Jon: I believe there will be an Ajax catalog distributed at AJAXWorld conference. We get two pages for free. OpenAjax members can participate via advertorial or ad, but there is a charge.
Chris: How to participate?
Jon: I am still trying to collect info about fees and rules. I will forward them as a receive them. But I wanted to check to make sure that it was OK to include an article about OpenAjax in the catalog. I think it is about 600 words.
(A couple of people): Yes. It's a no-brainer.
Chris: I am willing to collaborate on the 600 words.
Jon: Thanks. What I'll do is post the proposed article on the wiki and allow everyone to review.
Topic: Proposed communications plan
Jon: Haven't announced Hub 1.0 yet. Need to get the word out. I have proposed a 3-prong attack, with a few short articles to Ajaxian, some longer articles to sys-con, and then a press release at AJAXWorld. What do people think of the high-level plan?
Chris: Seems like the right thing overall but maybe there are improvements
David: Focus is good. We should also consider sending information to analysts and bloggers. Also need to keep key publications that follow Ajax industry closely informed.
Jon: Press release is targeted at those key publications.
David: In past, we have pre-briefed the press.
Chris: Good idea. For weeklies, the article could come out with the show. Also might want to target more business-oriented publications, such as CIO. I am pretty sure that executives, particularly CIOs, read that publication. Maybe tweak the press releases and announcements to include higher-level business benefit point of view that would make the information relevant to the CIOs. I would be willing to help to get executives to recognize the benefits. It would be good for the alliance to gain visibility with higher-level people in organizations.
Rick: Agreed.
Jon: Let's focus on the proposed text for Ajaxian. They post very short announcements. Therefore, I have a couple of paragraphs that simply plant seeds of awareness about Hub 1.0 and some of our next generation initiatives.
Ted: So far so good.
Chris: Maybe an intro about how Ajax has become the principal platform for Web 2.0 and how important mashups are. Then you have a version that could go into CIO magazine. This would allow two versions, one that is technical and one that puts the information in context for senior managers. I would be happy to collaborate on this.
Jon: What's the best way to work with a magazine in the absence of a press release?
Chris: Pitch a story instead of a press release. Usually managed from a PR department who works with their contacts. Often, the magazine will want to talk with customers, but because OpenAjax Alliance is a standards organization, they might not need that.
Jon: Probably still would. In the past, we have been asked for other people to talk to.
Chris: Maybe more work than you can take on.
Jon: Does anyone have any experience in dealing with Ajaxian?
Chris: Used to be focused mostly on technical people
Rick/Jon: Still are.
Chris: Focused on web programmers that no Ajax, not overall programmers.
Rick: Now they are moving more towards web programmers. I can help trying to get to Ajaxian.
Jon: I am pretty sure that I can just send an email to Dion.
Jon: Comments on AJAXWorld article? It covers much the same information, but to the next level of depth because their articles are longer. I figure the proposed content would fit on a single page of an online article.
Rick: Looks fine.
Jon: I was thinking that we should submit to Ajaxian ASAP.
(a couple): Yes
Jon: And sys-con soon afterwards.
(someone): What's the deadline for AJAXWorld magazine?
David: Something like 30 days before the conference.
Jon: I need to get on the ball for that.
Topic: Proposed web site makeover
Chris: Much cleaner.
(others): Much better than current site
David: Would search invoke Google?
Jon: Yes. Google does a great job indexing our site, including the wiki. I was thinking of invoking Google search APIs and then filtering the result to only leave items that start with www.openajax.org.
Jon: I used Dojo for the menu. Do we have to worry about toolkit neutrality?
Chris/David: Doesn't matter
Jon: How about XSLT on server to switch between different toolkits?
(everyone): No need to make things more difficult
David: Just use one and call it a day
Rick and someone else: Dojo is fine. It is reasonably neutral.
David: Talk to accessibility peopleabout color scheme and other ways to make it easier for people with disabilities
Jon: Also I was going to put some thought into whether there are things that would help with a better mobile experience.
David: Could ask Alex or IBM people who are doing mobile work about how mobile sites are approaching things today.
Jon: Facebook and Google are creating custom UIs for the iPhone. Pretty much the same web site, but look&feel revised to fit on small screen.
David: Not a top priority.
Jon: Agreed.
Topic: Mobile white paper
Jon: Just an FYI - a 6th white paper is coming
Rick: What I need as editor is feedback on whether this should be a white paper or a contributed article.
Jon: My thinking is that this would be the 6th OpenAjax white paper and parallel with other 5. That means it would have roughly the same length as the other white papers and about the same combination of business context and first-level deep technical content. I would say that it more like a contributed article except that we call it a white paper because of the other 5 similar articles that we called white papers.
Rick: How do we bring it to market?
Jon: I was thinking that we post it on our web site alongside the existing white papers, then create a condensed version of 1000-1500 words for inclusion in AJAXWorld print and online.
Rick: I'm fine with that and flexible for whatever everyone wants. Right now seems to be missing some key information.
David: I agree. Rick hit it on the nose.
Topic: Wrapup
Jon: OK. I'll send out notices about the articles to ask for feedback with a deadline for feedback. I'll fix the proposed website makeover with final graphics and ask for feedback again. Thanks everyone.
