Minutes

Chair: Rhys Scribe: Rhys Attendees: Jon, Rhys, Rick, Ellen, Louenas, Kai, Paddy, Bertrand, Rocco

  • Agenda: http://www.openajax.org/member/wiki/Mobile_Minutes_2007-10-24
  • Rhys notes that there is a mailing list and encourages people to join. Also that there is an IRC for the call
  • Ellen and Lounas both expect to be able to contribute.
  • Jon suggests talking about the unique opportunities for developers that mobile devices offer
  • Jon adds GPS, camera, messaging etc. are examples
  • Jon notes that Dan had a slide from the conference that had a more complete list of challenges. This was in the Mobile Ajax workshop. Other presentations add challenges and opportunities too
  • Jon - looks like a good initial outline
  • Rhys +1
  • Ellen - do we need something about compatibility between implementations of Ajax, or lack of it as one of the challenges
  • Rick - Avoiding the fragmentation issues that affected J2ME
  • Paddy +1
  • Rick - Plan to avoid fragmentation in mobile Ajax
  • Louenas - address security in the good practice section.
  • Jon - Will be some good practices associated with keeping applications small and simple. Also ways of being able to support different input devices
  • Jon - Helping Ajax developers write programs that are small and portable
  • Jon - At one point if you avoided multiple files, it improved performance by avoiding latency
  • Louenas - Problems associated with latency and battery use
  • Jon - Lots of use of XHR will cause battery use.
  • Louenas - Main difference between desktop and mobile is optimisation of communications. Really important difference for mobile frameworks.
  • Louenas - minimise the number of messages improves performance and reduces battery drain
  • Jon - Do we want to touch on widgets? Nokia has gone public with Widget APIs in S60.
  • Louenas - Yeah
  • Jon - We should mention it in characterising mobile Ajax support today
  • Rhys +1
  • Jon - One thing that came out of the workshop was the belief that des
  • desktop browser technology would be available eventually. OMA is producing its last spec for browsing
  • Jon - Could capture the bullets from the workshop in the section on futures
  • Jon - eg availability of desktop capability on mobile devices
  • Paddy - We talked a bit about device APIs. Is it worth mentioning that there are other things we are omitting?
  • Jon - Yes, we should mention them. Could put them under challenges and opportunities. No common API available yet
  • Jon - could mention that there are platform specific APIs. Java, Windows Mobile etc.
  • Jon - talk about the current state of APIs and the current security issues
  • Rhys - could also add it in the futures section as something that may become more standardised in future
  • Jon - We probably need to be prepared to rev the document on a fairly regularly basis to take account of the future actually happening
  • Rhys - I'll create a skeleton page with the table of contents so that people can then add material directly.
  • Rhys asks if people think they could add material in the next two to three weeks.
  • Rhys - general agreement that that is ok.
  • Rhys - gives us time to debate in the next call before Rick starts editing.
  • Rocco - i'd be happy to contribute - note sure if i should become a member before that though...?
  • Rhys briefly outlines the OMA meeting last week and discussion on device characteristics
  • No AOBs
  • Rhys closes meeting
